My Professional Learning Plan2016/2017
Faith GoalTo attend at least one Religions, Faith Forming PD.
Attended RMEC 2016. Here are my notes about the conference.Essential Question:How can art infused curriculum allow me to engage every student in my classroom and drive learning forward?
Why did I choose art infused learning?I am not afraid of art! I grew up with the idea that art has only one place - in art class, once a week. Music was twice a week and we sang songs and learned an instrument. If you ask any of my classmates they will say those were our favourite subjects. Why should that be the case?
If we integrate arts into language arts, math, science wouldn't that make those classes fun as well? In my 5 years of teaching, I found that to be true. In my first year of teaching I was integrating art effortlessly, without realizing I was doing that. Since then, art has become my go to when differentiating; when I want students to really connect with what I am teaching; when I want them to take ownership of their learning and make something memorable. What’s the Plan? |
What exactly will you do to answer your Essential Question?

Driving Questions:
How can art be integrated into core subjects?
Some art forms that we used this year :
- Storytelling through technology - IMovie, Trailers, puppet show, doodle art, dance.

See Some Examples
Storytelling in social studiesStudents were given a choice in how to present what they have learned about Ukraine. They could do anything they would like as long as there was an art element in the presentation. They then had to explain why they chose to do it that way and what is the element. This group wanted to use technology and a puppet show and the art element were the pictures.

Animated storytellingUsing Stop Motion, students created a short film. They had to create a story board, several drafts and decide on the illustrations.

What impact did integrating art into the core subjects have on student learning?
My goal was not just to incorporate art in my teaching, it was was also to help students realize their art potential and allow themselves to create and show their learning through art. I felt that students did not allow themselves to create and be "artistic" because they were afraid to fail. I started by explaining and working with my students to get them to see the beauty in what they did. I encouraged them to keep a positive self talk when it comes to their creations. We build a positive atmosphere and with that students felt safe to show their knowledge in a "unconventional " way.
I believe that the impact is evident in how proud my students are with their creations.

Final Thoughts
Focusing on art in my teaching has allowed me to explore different methods of assessment and look at the curriculum through the eyes of an "artist". It is very liberating to give the students the power to choose and art has given me the option to do so. I would continue working on integrating arts into the curriculum. I would like to incorporate more comprehensive rubrics to help me assess.
