While school can be a positive social experience for many children, for others it can be a nightmare.
School is not only a place where children learn reading, writing and math. It is also a place where they learn to get along with other people and develop social skills. Social skills are those communication, problem-solving, decision making, self-management, and peer relations abilities that allow one to initiate and maintain positive social relationships with others. Deficits or excesses in social behavior interfere with learning, teaching, and the classroom's orchestration and climate. Social competence is linked to peer acceptance, teacher acceptance, inclusion success, and post school success. In our classroom we strive to increase positive interactions and decrease negative ones. Each morning we work on a new skill or review an old one. |
Conflict ResolutionConflicts resolution is the number one problem I encounter in the classroom. Students come in from recess upset and often not knowing how to deal with the emotions they are feeling. Those feeling are often confused for "bullying" and often all it is is inability to communicate.
